Essays/personal statement

The application essay in the United States is between 250 and 650 words long, and some institutions require or allow for an optional second essay in the supplement part of the application form. In the UK, applicants complete one ‘personal statement’. This is similar in length to the US admissions essay, although length is counted in characters (1–4,000) rather than words.2 Table 7 gives an overview of the essay/personal statement prompts given to applicants when they complete their application form.
